New Maps

The new flood zone maps are out and The Pensacola News Journal has an article on them: Flood-mapping changes to reach higher.

While this was anticipated, the problem is that these maps do not reflect the flooding that occurred during hurricane Ivan. Although FEMA has the Ivan maps available for download [PDF files], they won't be reflected in the flood zone maps used for flood insurance for several years.

I would think that it makes more sense to use the most up-to-date data available. My gut feeling, and long experience on the Gulf Coast, says the next few years are going to be active. People buying houses in the area need to know what has flooded to buy appropriate insurance.

While you are at the News Journal site check out the Clydesdale pictures.
