It's been almost three years, but National Seashore Park officials say they expect the road from Pensacola Beach to Navarre Beach to reopen on Friday.
Formally known as "Bowden Way" after J. Earle Bowden, the crusading newspaper publisher who saved Santa Rosa Island from the development vultures, the road skirts a pristine stretch of the Gulf of Mexico shoreline for seven and a half miles, passing Opal Beach along the way. The road was torn away, first, by Hurricane Ivan in 2004 and, after rapid repairs, again in 2005 by Hurricane Dennis.
As PNJ photographer Katie King documents, below, the picnic pavilion and bathrooms at Opal Beach are still under re-construction.
